About

Giiwe, ‘s/he goes home’ in Anishinaabemowin is an Indigenous-led initiative that was created by M’Wikwedong Indigenous Friendship Center in March 2018.

Originally conceived to foster a culturally safe response to urban Indigenous homelessness, Giiwe creates a safe space to build relationships, foster meaningful collaboration and nurture trust between Indigenous and non-Indigenous agencies and organizations.

In its first year Giiwe was successful in establishing an inter-organizational housing-related response for Indigenous-specific housing needs and preferences. In its second year, the Indigenous Supportive Housing Program (ISHP) was developed.
Having been recognized as a successful method for health promotion, a model of Giiwe was built by the University of Toronto (please refer to links).

Building on its capacity to improve collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous, Giiwe pursues its journey by guiding Reconciliation pathways and providing opportunities for Indigenous leadership within agencies and organizations across multiple sectors such as government, health, justice, social, education, etc.

Giiwe continues to build bridges of understanding and initiate healing processes for all so we can move forward in a good way on this shared journey!
